Search for NoFap advice and you will find a long list of tricks: cold showers, dopamine fasting, extreme challenges, rituals with strict rules. Some of them give men a useful jolt, and others carry hype that the evidence does not support. It helps to know which is which before you build your recovery around any of them.
Cold Showers
The best-known trial tested cold showering in 3,018 adults, who took a hot-to-cold shower for 30, 60 or 90 seconds a day for 30 days or were in a control group. The cold-shower groups had 29% less sickness absence from work, and no significant difference in the number of illness days (Buijze et al., 2016). The study did not test urges, porn use or recovery, so it says nothing about NoFap directly.
In practice, a cold shower can work as a pattern interrupt. It changes your location, wakes up your body and takes your attention off the urge for a few minutes. That is a legitimate use, and it works like any other change of scene. If you have a heart condition or another health issue, check with a doctor before using cold exposure.
Bottom line: a cold shower is a fine interrupt for an urge, and the evidence for it is thin. Use it as one tool among several.
Dopamine Fasting
The idea is to cut out pleasurable activities for a period so your reward system can reset. Experts quoted by Live Science say the name is misleading. One neuroscientist noted that dopamine relates more to motivation than pleasure and cannot realistically be eliminated, and another said that removing all pleasure is neither realistic nor clearly healthy and is not standard medical treatment (Live Science, 2019). The psychologist who helped popularize the term says his version is a CBT-style approach to cutting back on problem behaviors, and that others pushed it to an unfounded extreme.
The sensible core is simple: reduce time on the behaviors that trigger you. That already happens when you clean up your feeds and limit scrolling, as covered in how to clean up your social media feeds. A full day of silence, no food and no conversation adds little and tends to leave men miserable and isolated, which raises relapse risk.
“I tried every extreme challenge going. They all ended in a relapse around week three. What lasted was a boring list: sleep, training, phone out of the bedroom, one friend to check in with.”
Fasting, Extreme Challenges and Strict Rituals
Some men add food restriction, punishing workouts or elaborate rules on top of quitting. These plans can backfire. Hunger and exhaustion lower your ability to resist urges, and a rigid rule invites the all-or-nothing thinking that turns one slip into a collapse. Food and recovery are covered in NoFap and diet consistency. If you have a history of disordered eating, avoid using food restriction as a recovery tool and speak to a doctor or therapist.
What to expect: a hack can feel powerful in week one and fade by week three. Judge any technique by whether you can keep doing it on a bad Tuesday, since that is the day your recovery depends on.
What Has Better Support
Research on relapse prevention in substance use shows that structured approaches help. In a randomized trial, both mindfulness-based and cognitive-behavioral relapse prevention reduced relapse risk compared with a 12-step comparison group, and the benefits differed by outcome and time point (Bowen et al., 2014). That trial studied alcohol and drug use, so it applies to porn only by analogy.
The shared ingredients are a plan for high-risk situations, coping skills and the habit of noticing an urge without acting on it. You can build these into daily life:
- Urge surfing. Notice the urge, label it, breathe, and watch it rise and fall. The steps are in how to handle an urge in the moment.
- If-then plans. Decide your response ahead of time, as in building a morning routine that protects your recovery.
- Sleep and movement. The basics that steady your energy, covered in the complete guide to energy, drive and body.
- Friction and support. Blockers, a phone-free bedroom and someone to report to.

Frequently asked questions
Is there harm in trying a cold shower?
For most healthy adults a brief cold shower is low risk, and the trial above reported no serious adverse events. People with heart or circulation problems, or other health conditions, should ask a doctor first.
Do I need a supplement or special protocol?
Most men do better by fixing sleep, movement, friction and support first. If you suspect a deficiency or a medical problem, a doctor can test for it, which beats guessing with supplements.
The bottom line
Hacks can help you through a bad ten minutes, and none of them can carry a recovery. Use a cold shower or a walk as an interrupt, skip the extreme fasts and strict rituals, and put your effort into the plain tools: a plan for risky moments, friction, sleep, movement and support.
